4. Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is a cancer most commonly found in children that targets immature nerve cells in the sympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the body that activates both the “fight” and “flight” response in humans (preparing the individual to either take action or run away. For example, if you are in a situation where someone pulls out a knife it is the the sympathetic nervous system that triggers your response to either take on the knifeman or get the heck out of there.
This cancer targets cells in the body called neuroblasts. For some reason sometimes these cells act in a way that is abnormal and can develop into benign (non-cancerous) tumors. However it can also lead to neuroblastoma. This most often occurs in the adrenal gland, which can be found right above the kidney. An even rarer type of this disease is called ganglioneuroblastoma, which is essentially a middleground between being cancerous and non-cancerous.
