Common Health Problems in Babies

Frequent Spit-Ups

Many babies suffer from what is known as gastroesophageal reflux, which is the technical term for consistent regurgitation of food. This will cause a baby to cry a lot (understandably as the undigested food also now contains stomach acid that burns on its way up). According to one source, the reason why this is such a problem in babies is due to the fact that “the circular band of muscle that acts as a valve between the esophagus and the stomach is immature.” In order to reduce the likelihood that your child will experience these unpleasant frequent spit ups, professionals suggest to feed your baby smaller portion sizes but more often. Doing so can increase saliva production, in turn helping to neutralize the acid in the stomach
