7 Parenting Techniques to (Try to) Get Toddlers to Cooperate

4. Relationship before Request

This next technique is one that might be beneficial to use in all of our relationships, not just the ones we have with our toddlers. According to Psychology Today, it is helpful to first engage your toddler in conversation before requesting that they perform a task. One way to do this is to join what they are doing. For instance, if they are colouring a picture try to colour with them before asking them to put their art supplies away.

It is also advised that you ask them for their opinion on the task that you would like them to perform, providing them with a sense of control instead of simply giving them directions.
