Easy Ways to Make Sure Your Kids Feel Loved

Ask Better Questions, and Listen to the Answers

We have all asked the classic “How was school?” question and I bet at least once you received a “Fine,” in response. The trick? Ask questions that require more than one word answers. For instance, instead of simply asking how school was, ask things like “What was the best part of your day today?” or “What was the hardest question on your math test about?”

It’s one thing to learn how to ask the right questions to your children to elicit detailed answers, but it’s also crucial as parents that we listen to their answers. Following up on their answer will also show your child that you care and that you are listening, this can be done by paraphrasing your child’s answers and asking follow-up questions. Opening up the channels of communication and making it easy for them to talk to you will increase the likelihood that your child will come to you when they need help with things such as bullying or underage drinking.
